Can Therapy Help me?
Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and her team are here to help you work through your struggles. She can be a resource for you in helping you get to a better place in a warm and comfortable environment. Therapy is able to help almost everyone and there is no shame in asking for help. Many times we feel that we can figure it out on our own, but unfortunately that often leads to us doing the same things over and over, hoping for a different result. Change is difficult, even when we want it, so having a trained professional help you can be the key to success.
If you are feeling stuck or struggling in any area, Dr. Cynthia Edwards- Hawver and Associates can help guide you on your path to progress
I want to meet with Dr. Edwards-Hawver but she is full. Can one of her associates help me in the same way she can?
Yes! Dr. Edwards-Hawver is very selective in who she hires to join her practice. This is a small practice and we all work together as a close- knit team. Everything you would get from Dr. Edwards-Hawver, you will get from one of her associates, and then some. That is because each of her therapists has at least a masters degree, additional training, years of experience, and they get supervision directly from Dr. Edwards-Hawver on a regular basis. It is like getting two therapists for the price of one.
Additionally, if you are ever unhappy with the services you are receiving from one of her associates, Dr. Edwards-Hawver is willing to talk with you, address your concerns, and make the problem right in anyway she can. This has never happened at the practice, but there is always a first time for everything and she guarantees that she is available to you if you ever have an issue.
Will Therapy Fix All My Problems?
It would be nice if there was a way to erase any trauma in our lives or take away our pain instantly, unfortunately, that is not the way the brain works or therapy. Therapy requires active participation on your part. Often times it requires you to do work discussed in therapy sessions between each session. We work as guides and are pretty active in directing you, but you have to do the work. If that feels like a struggle for you, then we will work with you to figure out why helping yourself is such a challenge. The goal of therapy is to make you feel better so you do not have to be in therapy forever. We want to help and get you on to living the best possible life you can.
When working with children, parents are often directed as to what they can be doing between sessions to help treat your child. We only get to see your child for an hour a week, and you are with your child everyday, so active participation is required in treating your child in therapy.
The most effective therapy comes about when you bring in issues you want to work on and actively talk and participate in your own counseling experience.
How Long Will I Be In Therapy?
This really depends on your history, the presenting issue you are dealing with, and your participation in the process. Some people come to therapy for a few sessions and some are in therapy for years. The more complex your issue, the longer treatment may be. People who suffer from complex trauma, eating disorders, and chronic illness tend to be in therapy longer than someone dealing from one episode of depression. Again, our goal is to get you feeling better and not to try and keep you in therapy for the rest of your life.
Do You Prescribe Medication?
Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver is a psychologist, not a psychiatrist, so she is unable to prescribe medication. Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and Associates works closely with your general physician, psychiatrists, and nurse practioners, all of who can prescribe medication if necessary. We believe that medication can help a great deal with certain disorders but we do not push medication unless you are comfortable with the process.
I Have Been To Therapy and The Therapist Just Sat There, Is This What Will Happen At Your Practice?
Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver and her associates take a more active role in therapy process. We are not blank slates that do not offer guidance and direction. You will find your therapy experience to be engaging and active. This also means that you need to participate but you will receive positive, engaging, and mutual correspondence. Dr. Cynthia Edwards-Hawver trains her therapists in a more “coaching like way” which is much more active form of psychotherapy.
Do I Have To Relive My Entire Past Trauma?
The philosophy that most of us have is that your life experience has made you the person you are today, so yes, we need to discuss your past. With that being said, the goal is to eventually move you toward the here and now in order to get better. Our past is important and it needs to be processed and often healed in order to move forward. Some people have very little in their past and some have a lot. We will meet you with where you are at and where you want to see yourself go.
Do You Take Insurance?

I See You Offer Group Therapy, What Is This All About?
Many people are resistant to group therapy at first, however, we have found (and so have many researchers), that this can provide better results than individual therapy. In a group, you are surrounded by people who are dealing with the same issues as you, which can feel very comforting. Additionally, you can begin to see how others in the world may perceive you and things you can work on, which is very difficult to see in individual therapy. Some of our groups are focused on developing a completely different mindset, such as our DBT group. To see more about our current group offerings, please click here.
